The Elder Scrolls Online or ESO is one of the most popular role-playing games today. In fact, more and more players are playing the game ever since it was released.

However, to be able to play the game without any problem, a Mac computer has to have a reliable internet connection and meet certain system requirements. All that said, it’s no surprise why many users have reported and complained about lag problems, disconnections, high ping, and other related issues.

Now, if your Elder Scrolls Online is not working properly or Elder Scrolls Online is not running on your Mac anymore, continue reading below for some possible solutions.

Elder Scrolls Online Lag Problems and Solutions

Many users have been looking for solutions to their ESO lag problems. While some have been checking online communities and forums, others are seeking in-game support. All of them are hoping to find a fix to their ESO gaming problem.

Unfortunately, there is no universal or proven solution to the problem. Until now, the developers of the game are trying to resolve the lag issues. That means, at this point, there is nothing much to do to fix the lag.

You can get around the problem by making adjustments to your Mac computer settings. Although there is no guarantee whether these adjustments can get rid of the problem, they’re still worth trying.

1. Check if your Mac is powerful enough to handle the game.

Is your Mac powerful enough to play Elder Scrolls Online? As technology advances and more games are released, there is also a noticeable change in computer specs for gaming. Adapting to these requirements is necessary if you want to play your favorite online games without any problems.

So, if you are experiencing lags while playing Elder Scrolls Online, that could be because your Mac does not meet the official system requirements for the game. Below are the minimum and recommended system requirements of ESO for Mac.

Minimum System Requirements:

  • Operating System: Mac OS X 10.7.0 or later
  • Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo
  • GPU: Intel HD Graphics 4000, NVIDIA GeForce GT 330M, or ATI Radeon HD 6490M
  • CPU: 4GB
  • Storage: 60GB
  • Media: DVD-ROM
  • Resolution: 1024×768

Recommended System Requirements:

  • Operating System: Mac OS X 10.9
  • Processor: Intel i5
  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce 640 or AMD Radeon 5670
  • CPU: 4GB
  • Storage: 85GB
  • Media: DVD-ROM

Make sure your Mac has met these system requirements. If not, better upgrade your Mac to fix your lag problem for good.

2. Make adjustments in the Graphics Settings.

If upgrading your Mac is not an option, try to adjust the settings of the in-game graphics. Adjust all the in-game graphics settings from high to low and see if it can make a difference. After that, work your way through by finding the best setting that suits your current hardware.

3. Uninstall and then re-install the game.

If the second solution did not work, you can try removing the game and its launcher. Afterwards, try reinstalling them to see if your problem has been fixed. While this seems like an odd solution, it has already helped many users get through their lag problems. Perhaps this will work for you as well, if done properly and with the right amount of caution.

Once you have uninstalled the game and the launcher, use a cleanup program like Tweakbit Mac Repair to remove all the residual files and traces that still exist. Next, restart your Mac. As soon as your computer restarts, download the game and the launcher again. Check if Elder Scrolls Online still lags.

4. Make sure you have a fast and stable Internet connection.

Internet connection speed also matters when playing the game. One of the basic requirements for playing Elder Scrolls Online is a good internet connection of at least 4Mbps, both download and upload. The mentioned speed should not be shared with any other users or devices. It has to be allocated to your Mac alone.

If your Internet connection is wireless, then you might have problems. One common mistake made by ESO players is they use wireless internet connection. Technically, a wireless connection is prone to disconnections, lag, packet loss, and high pings. And sad to say, there is nothing you can do to improve it; only your Internet service provider can deal with it.

Always use a wired internet connection when playing Elder Scrolls Online and you can count on one less concern that leads to lag issues in the game.

Conclusion

Macs are not really known for their gaming prowess. But hopefully, the solutions above can help you fix severe lag problems when playing Elder Scrolls Online on a Mac computer.

This error appears when the launcher cannot find a meta data file online needed for patching. This usually indicates a server-side error.

If a patch recently came out, you should wait a few minutes and try again.

If you continue to experience this issue, you should try the troubleshooting steps below:

Step 1: Test for Connection Issues

  • Test whether you have a connection issue with our patcher servers by attempting to reach the following link.
    • After the page loads, the text 'Download Test File' should display on a blank white page.
      • If it does, then your computer is able to connect to our patcher servers. If you are still getting the same error message, proceed to Step 2.
      • If you do not see that text, this indicates a network connectivity issue between your network and our patcher servers. In this case, if you are using a wireless connection switch to a wired connection instead and vice-versa. After switching, click here to test your connection again.
  • You can find additional Windows connection troubleshooting steps that include both wired and wireless connections below:

Step 2: Run the ESO Launcher as an Administrator

We recommend that you run the launcher as an Administrator by following the steps below:

  1. Right click on the ESO launcher and select to Properties.
  2. From there, navigate to the Compatibility tab.
    • If you have Windows 8, we advise you to click in the Compatibility box and to select Windows 7.
  3. At the bottom of the screen, check the box Run As Administrator.
  4. Hit Apply, then Ok.
  5. Right click on the launcher and select Run As Administrator.

The game should now download any updates and install them. Once that completes, you should be able to play the game.

Note: If you do not have the ability to do the steps above, your profile on your Windows machine does not have administrator privileges. See here for more information.

Step 3: Ensure the ESO files are added to your firewall and anti-virus programs.

The application files that may require exceptions are:

  • Bethesda.net_launcher: C:Program Files (x86)ZenimaxOnlineLauncher
  • ESO.exe: C:Program Files (x86)ZenimaxOnlineThe Elder Scrolls Onlinegameclienteso.exe
  • Steam.exe: C:Program Files (x86)Steamsteam.exe
  • ESO64.exe: C:Program Files (x86)Zenimax OnlineThe Elder Scrolls Onlinegameclienteso64.exe

Some antivirus programs require entire folders to be selected instead of a single file. When this is the case, the file paths below are what players should use. If required by the anti-virus program, include all subfolders since every file is critical to run the game.

  • C:Program Files (x86)Zenimax OnlineThe Elder Scrolls Online
  • C:Program Files (x86)Steam

Step 4: Delete the ProgramData Folder

  1. Make sure to close out the ESO Launcher before proceeding.
  2. Navigate to the patch installation folder and delete the ProgramData folder. By default, this folder will be located at the following directories:
    • PC: C:Program Files (x86)Zenimax OnlineLauncherProgramData
    • Steam: C:Program Files (x86)SteamsteamappscommonZenimax OnlineLauncherProgramData
  3. Restart the ESO Launcher.

The Launcher should now display 'Creating Download.' This is normal as the launcher begins the regeneration process. It can take anywhere between 21-30% before the launcher switches to 'Downloading Game Files.'
